Review of Bulgarian Design Local Beauty
Commissioned by Studio Komplekt (a Sofia-based cultural management and consultancy agency), we designed the custom catalogue for the 2022 Review of Bulgarian Design: Local Beauty exhibition (part of the MELBA Design Festival). The challenge was to create a publication as inspiring as the exhibition itself.
In line with the 2022 “Local Beauty” theme, artists were tasked with creating works using only regional resources, materials, and traditions. Our goal was to design a catalogue that would complement the exhibition’s overall experience. The final result features vivid neon-yellow Pantone printing on recycled paper. Moreover, the cover design sets the tone, with each artist’s work represented by a road-sign-inspired symbol. This decision eased the navigation across the pages, whilst also served as a content breaker for the structured black-and-white layout. Ultimately, this catalogue adds an unexpected dimension—or beauty, if you will—to the visitor’s experience, revealed only within a specific (local) context.
